Baxter Renal Care Website

Baxter’s Renal Care division offers comprehensive, innovative treatments for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD), including home peritoneal dialysis (PD) and in-center hemodialysis.

Project Overview:

The renal care website was in need for an accessibility refresh; their current website had documented usability, organization and functionality issues, causing problems for customers with challenges. The goal for this project was to redesign the website with accessibility in mind and ADA, WCAG AA standards.

The Problem:

The existing site was difficult for a person with a visual impairment to interact with the website.

The challenge was to design a streamlined experience that:before we got into the redesign I wanted to get a handle on trends and problems with the current website.  Testing was done for keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility and color contrast.

My Role: UX Lead

Responsibilities included:

  • Automated Testing using tools such as WAVE, Google Lighthouse and Silktide
  • Manual Testing (Human Evaluation) such as Keyboard navigation, Screenreader testing, Color Contrast check and Zoom testing
  • Heading logic making sure all headings used nested structure logically instead of skipping levels for styling

Outcome

The site was brought up to WCAG 2.1 standards to ensure a ideal experience for all visitors to the website

  • Improved accessibility
    • Elements passes ARIA attributes
    • Elements met color contrast ratio thresholds
    • Heading levels increase by one each time
